A Better Future for Kentucky’s Wildlife

Frankfort, KY – Do you enjoy Kentucky’s wildlife resources? Do you hunt, trap, fish, boat or enjoy watching wildlife? Are you concerned about the future of Kentucky’s wildlife? Have you thought about what Kentucky’s wildlife resources is going to be like for your grandchildren? Would you like to be involved in building a better future for Kentucky’s wildlife?
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife wants your help. The Department, over the next 10 months, is developing a strategic plan which will set future direction for wildlife management. The strategic plan will identify and prioritize the critical issues that must be addressed by the Department and will set goals and objectives to address these issues.
If you want to find out more or get involved, there are three ways to do so... In all three options the Department is seeking public input. That input will be reviewed and considered by the department planning team putting the plan together.
Come to an open house. There are six meetings scheduled. All public meetings will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Public meetings are scheduled for Tuesday, October 10 at Curtis Gates Lloyd WMA in Grant County; Wednesday, October 11 at the Morehead Conference Center in Morehead;
Thursday, October 12, at the Rural Law Enforcement Technology Center in Hazard; Tuesday, October 17 at the UK Research and Education Center in Princeton; Wednesday, October 18 in the Old Dining Hall at Campbellsville University in Campbellsville; and Thursday, October 19 at the Franklin County Extension Office in Frankfort.
This is a chance to share thoughts about the future and to hear what has been happening with regard to the strategic planning initiative.
Watch the Kentucky Afield TV show on Kentucky Educational Television (KET), Saturday, September 30, at 8:30 p.m. and Sunday, October 1st at 4 p.m. It will also be broadcast October 4 on WYMT (Hazard) at 7 p.m., and on October 7 at 12:30 p.m. on WPSD (Paducah).
These episodes will include a segment about the purpose and responsibilities of KDFWR and its specific plan to build “A Better Future for Kentucky’s Wildlife” Persons can see and hear the types of services and programs in which KDFWR is involved, and get a closer look at the issues confronting Kentucky’s fish and wildlife resources.
Check out the KDFWR website (
www.fw.ky.gov). It will soon include highlights about the strategic plan and additional ways to get involved in this process. Anyone logging onto this site will have an opportunity to help identify the most important issues and measures of success with regards to habitat, fish and wildlife populations, outdoor recreations issues, funding and partnerships. There will also be a method for providing public input into draft components of the strategic plan and information about staying abreast of progress throughout the process.
